ISLE OF WIGHT

In 1968 a small group of bowlers, under the Chairmanship of the late Tom Blake made their vision of an Indoor Bowls facility on the Isle of Wight a reality. The venue found was the former Ryde Airport, so the Club was formed in late August. The formidable task of turning their dream into reality then began. It was important to establish the Club as quickly as possible and without today’s access to different sources of funds, it was at times necessary for the group to provide personal funding to continue with the building work until income from the slowly increasing membership was forthcoming.
League matches on the 3 rinks started in late December 1968 at which time membership had reached over 100. The following month the Club staged it’s first match against a team from the English Bowls Association (EBA). The Club was on it’s way.
Whilst membership continued to grow over the next few years, it was necessary for the Club to turn the facilities over to the Carousel disco in the summer months in order to balance the books. The quiet atmosphere of a bowls match changed for the latest hits of the day. Each April the carpet would be rolled up and re-laid in October after members had worked hard to clean up the building and remove the evidence of its summer role. This arrangement continued until the Club purchased the freehold of the property in 1983. In 1992 the facilities were extended to 6 rinks, with much of the work being carried out by the Club members themselves.
The Club remains the premier indoor bowls facility on the Isle of Wight and can be proud of it’s many achievements over the last 40 years. During this time it’s members have also competed in club and National Championship competitions.
